Windows XP customers also run a significant risk of functionality issues with their machines if they install these updates, as they are not tested against Windows XP.

The best way for Windows XP customers to protect their systems is to upgrade to a more modern operating system, like Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Microsoft Office is a productivity staple. Just be sure you have an Internet connection. But for heavy-duty productivity, the world is moving toward subscription-based software. Microsoft comes with more offerings than Office , monthly updates, the ability to share among multiple devices, plus a heaping 1TB of free cloud storage.

Scharon Harding has a special affinity for gaming peripherals especially monitors , laptops and virtual reality. Previously, she covered business technology, including hardware, software, cyber security, cloud and other IT happenings, at Channelnomics, with bylines at CRN UK.

Tom's Hardware Tom's Hardware. Scharon Harding opens in new tab. Topics Microsoft. See all comments I'll stick with my copy of office , Since it looks about the same as , is functionally identical for Microsoft's "support" of office is beyond a joke considering Microsoft hasn't significantly updated the suite or added meaningful features since As for Office , if your work isn't already paying for your subscription and requiring you to use their cloud services, then you almost certainly don't need it.

Yet again mentioning a third party key site that has had numerous shady problems around it as a source for legitimate keys. I have no idea why they would ever be mentioned on a PC Enthusiast site when it has been shown that keys bought there have the potential of being stolen, fraudulent or eventually deactivated.

If you have to charge extra for "guaranteed not fake" products you are absolutely selling "guaranteed fake" products. Office isn't free on iPad Pro's without an Office subscription sadly.

Table of contents. Microsoft Lifecycle Policy Consistent and predictable guidelines for the availability of support throughout the life of a product. Search by Product Find Lifecycle Policy information about a product. Modern Policy Products with continuous support and servicing. Fixed Policy Products with defined end-of-support dates at the time of release. I installed, using the key I was given.

Then I went back to Services and Subscriptions and there is still no license under my account. How does this become a lifetime license? Use that account to complete the installation. The 'life" MS is referring to is the end date in the MS "lifecycle". It "officially" no longer provides and updates at all, specifically security bug updates.

Unofficially, MS will sometimes provide a security update for "unsupported" versions if the bug is particularly virulent, but you can't count on that. Specifically, after EOL, MS will no longer provide any support for activating Office which is required when transferring the license to new computer.

In the license terms, using Office is very much "use at your own risk". But After EOL, using Office is very much more "use at your own risk" than when it is still "supported". The license terms of Office and still give you the right to "transfer" a license to a new computer. But they have now made doing that transfer almost impossible.

Back in , when you activated a one-time payment, aka "Lifetime" license, it did show up in the MyAccount site. You could "deactivate" it from one computer and "transfer" it to a new computer by installing on the new computer from the MyAccount site. In the last year or so, MS dis " Improved " the myaccount site to remove that user control.

Depending on how you use your subscrption it can be massively more expensive in just the short term. For example. Home and Student can be installed on only one computer. IF you have simple needs, specifically you have only 1 computer and do not use the "extra features" that come with , after slightly more than 2 years and going forward, Personal is more expensive. MS has been proudly touting that they have not increased the cost of one-time payment licenses.

How much more expensive depends on your Office version. By silently changing the license terms MS has massively increased onetime office costs.
